He does love me!!

Everyday for almost two years I have told this little boy of mine that I love him. I don't really feel like I've ever really received a true response back or any indication that he feels the same way. I have wished that I could hear him say that he loves me. Today I got my wish, sort of.
We have a new device called a Step-by-Step which attaches to a switch that Jonas controls with his toes. Our totally awesome Speech Therapist, Laura, showed us some things that kids love to do with this Step-by-Step.
The first game we tried was just a conversation...Hey Mom, what ya doing, I need you. Every time Jonas activates his switch one of these phrases would be said.
Jonas' reaction: nothing. In fact he was getting frustrated and mad.
We move on to the next game.

Kind of Hide and Seek through conversation... I leave the room, Jonas calls...Mom, where are you, I need you, come here...
Jonas' reaction: starts to cry big tears, then he really needs me because he's choking. Part of me thinks that his positioning has something to do with the way things went, but Jonas has the tendency to get anxious when I leave the room and another person is there with him.
I come back into the room and we quickly play another game.

Reading the Itsy Bitsy Spider book...we record the story in phrases and every time Jonas hits the switch, the story is told in order part by part.
Jonas' reaction: He loves it and smiles throughout. He is a little slow at first, but then he catches on and continues for a second reading. Every time I cue him to use his toe he listens by using his toe. A good indication that Jonas understands what I say and can follow directions!

Last game was the I love you Conversation... I love you Mom, it's true, I do, I love you... Again every time Jonas hits the switch a new phrase is said.
Jonas' reaction: Loves it!!! He immediately smiles and looks right at me!!! His toe can't hit the switch fast enough. He goes through the sayings twice and smiles at me the entire time.
I started crying! Kind of embarrassing, but I didn't care.
Jonas told me he loved me with his eyes, his smile, a voice! I will never forget the look in his eyes as he told his mommy he loves me!!
(let's hope that he will tell me again...maybe it was a once in a lifetime opportunity)

(P.S. a big big Thank You to all who have ever donated to Jonas' fund. These are the kind of things that we can get for Jonas because of such kind and generous people.)

That is so great to hear. Even if he can't tell you vocally, I know he loves you more than you'll ever know. You are a great mother. He is lucky to have such caring parents and family. God Bless

That switch is so neat and such a great way to give Jonas some control and a voice. Thank you for sharing this post. I know that Jonas loves you. While you were gone, whenever I would talk about you he would smile at the mention of you. Hope you're doing well and I'll get to see you guys sometime soon. If ever you have a free span of time you should come visit.

Oh, Lindsey! I couldn't keep the tears back. What a day for you - and what a day for Jonas. I think of how much he has been longing to let you know how he feels about you...!

This is a time when I can say without reservation: Thank God For Technology. Talk about the best possible uses of it!

Thank you for this wonderful story, which said so much to the rest of us.

We love your family!

Awwww, you about made me cry. What a beautiful moment. Taleah said her first word at 18 months and just kept on talking. We thought it would be the same with Tabitha since she made baby noises from early, early on. She turns two next month and we can't even get a yes no response out of her - verbal or nonverbal. It's definitely a new experience for us. I ache for a way for her to express herself. I love that through a switch device as well as eyes and expression, Jonas found a way to tell you that he loves you.

I'm tearing up for you. I know how much those words mean when you fear you will not get to hear them. I am so so so happy for you, Lindsey!!! We are working on Dakin's speech--he's just being stubborn, unfortunately. But he does tell me from time to time in his own way--he says 'ma ma' and blows kisses.
