Beside the Seaside

We're home! Sorry that we disappeared for awhile...we went on an amazing trip to Newport Beach, California. The rain stayed in Utah so that we could have great weather there. It's weird to think that it was a year ago that we took Jonas for his first time. He was a little bit easier to pack for then. This trip I think we just about packed up the whole house. We took his wagon, his Trek jogger, his stroller, and this new little chair for him to use in the house (explanation later). Also he is quite a bit longer (34 in. to be exact) and therefore requires two seats in the suburban, so Uncle Taylor had to drive his car too.

We left two Fridays ago and came back this last Sunday. Our days were spent with walks on the boardwalk, playing in the sand, trying to play in the freezing cold water, napping on the beach, taking a bike ride to Balboa Island and shopping. Most nights we stayed in and watched movies while some other nights were more shopping opportunities. You know, shopping isn't much fun when you don't have any money..have you noticed that. :)
Anyway, not important. I'm pretty sure Jonas had a good time and that is what matters. He LOVED to play in the sand. He would wiggle his little toes in the sand and liked the feel of the wet sand in his hands. That really is the most I've ever seen him move his fingers for something. Like I mentioned the water was really cold, but Jonas is such a superman. The initial touch made him cry but then he seriously would have been fine if we got his whole body in. I think he could feel the tide and he likes that feeling. He only got his bum wet. We literally spent all day at the beach and Jonas just goes along with us. The first day he wouldn't take a nap in his wagon and I was a little worried that most of our trip was going to be in the house watching TV while he slept, but all he wanted to do was sleep wrapped up in a towel on the sand. He took a good nap everyday after we figured that out. The worst that happened was Whit went into the ocean with his phone...bye-bye phone.
Oh and we went to Disneyland for a day. We can't not go!!! It was so close. I did forget his umbrella which I thought was going to be the worst thing ever, but it turned out to be a great overcast day all day and he had a sweet hat from Max to wear. There was almost an episode right before we were to get on the Woody's Roundup Ride, but Jonas was distracted enough to pull himself together. That is one wild ride...they changed their policy and will allow lap riders now and so I couldn't deprive Jonas of the opportunity to wear 3-D glasses and be whipped around like a rag doll. Of course I held on to him tightly so he didn't loose his head. It was all good.

Trips are always too short. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I am so glad that I have my little Jonas to cherish and spent such great times with. I think back to this January when Jonas was so sick and we were contemplating the hospital again, but instead received a miracle. He was meant to stick around a while longer. Who knows how much longer, with the way things are going maybe a lot longer than anyone ever anticipated. My heart is overwhelmed with the gratitude to have another trip with him, another day, another second with him. My parents and family are so great to always be willing to go on these trips. To make things possible. What would I do without them. For Whit, who works so hard each day and has crazy busy weeks so that he can take off and spend time with us. So back to life....at least for another week.

I was wondering what had happened to you guys. I'm glad you were off doing something fun. Zak and I were looking at your post and wishing we were at the beach too. We also couldn't believe how much longer and older Jonas is looking since we saw him.

I love the pictures--You captured some great ones. I especially love the ones of you and Jonas playing in the pail. Hope you guys are doing well!

This post made my day. I have really started to get worried about you, and it was great news that you have been out having fun instead of struggling with being in the hospital or something like that. I don't mean that you have to check in with us or keep us posted every minute - far from it! - but just want you to know that we care and that we miss you when you're gone! :))

I'll have a better day now because of you and your sweet family!

Love,

Cathy Groves

Okay, sorry, but I had to leave one more message after I looked at the pictures and watched the videos. Your comments are so fun and so funny. Another reason (among millions) why I am so grateful that Jonas has you two for his parents - nobody could be more cheerful and encouraging and fun than you two are. You are really something else.

You sure make the best of the challenges and struggles - and bring so much good out of them, not only for Jonas, but for everyone else.

I was waiting for the ... "how could we NOT go to Disneyland?" sentence... spoken like a true Mathie/Coleman!

I'm glad you had a safe and fun trip. Jonas in the sand is so precious. I love the pictures, I love your insights. I agree with the other comment on how lucky Jonas is to belong to your family.

Glad to see you're having fun with Jonas. Also, it was fun to see your dad and mom and the rest of the family. Sorry that I missed you all when I was in town in May. Bad timing, but I would have loved to see you all. See you at Christmas!
